While it may have taken a year longer than it should have, Russell Westbrook of the Oklahoma City Thunder is going to the NBA All-Star Game. It was announced last night that he was selected as a reserve for the Western Conference, as it will make him a first time All-Star.

Westbrook is clearly having a career year for the Thunder. In just his third season in the NBA, Westbrook is averaging 22.4 points, 8.5 assists and 5.1 rebounds per game. He is developing into one of the finest all around point guards in the game, and it is nice to finally see him receive the attention and recognition that he has been deserving of for quite some time now.

It is a homecoming of sorts for Westbrook, who will be playing in the All-Star Game about 15 miles from where he grew up in California. This year's game is in the Staples Center.

It speaks volume to Westbrook's selection, as he plays the same position as so many talented players in the Western Conference. Westbrook joins Deron Williams of the Utah Jazz and Manu Ginobili of the San Antonio Spurs as the other two reserve guards, and they will join Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers and Chris Paul of the New Orleans Hornets as the starting guards on the team.

That means that Westbrook beat out great guards such as Monta Ellis (Golden State Warriors), Steve Nash (Phoenix Suns), Tony Parker (San Antonio Spurs), Kevin Martin (Houston Rockets), Chauncey Billups (Denver Nuggets), Eric Gordon (Los Angeles Clippers) and Andrew Miller (Portland Trailblazers). That is some impressive talent.

This now means that the Thunder will be well represented throughout All-Star weekend. Westbrook will join Kevin Durant, who was voted on to the team as a starter. Serge Ibaka will also be there, as he will participate in the Slam Dunk Contest the night before the game.
